Our Craft: The art of the polish
At Tumbled Travels, we treat lapidary work as both an art and a science. We don’t mass-purchase generic, untraceable bulk stones. Instead, every single gem in our collection is personally found, rigorously inspected, and painstakingly polished to a mirror finish in our shop. If a stone isn't high-caliber enough for us to proudly wear ourselves, we don't want you to wear it either. Here is a look inside our meticulous quality process.
The Expert Eye: In-Field Inspection
Our quality control begins long before a stone ever touches a machine. Whether we are harvesting raw specimens from our own private land, searching approved private claims, or hunting through the "discard bins" at local rock shops to rescue overlooked gems, we inspect everything right in the field. If a stone doesn't possess the structural integrity and inherent beauty required for a lifetime of wear, it doesn't make the trip back to our shop.
The Tumbling Protocol: Zero Cross-Contamination
Achieving a flawless, glass-like shine requires strict discipline. A single rogue grain of coarse grit left behind can ruin days of fine polishing. To prevent cross-contamination, we run an uncompromising shop:
- Dedicated Barrels: We use completely separate, dedicated barrels for every single grit stage of the tumbling process. Coarse, medium, and fine grits never share the same space.
- Ultrasonic Cleansing: Between every single cycle, our stones undergo a rigorous ultrasonic wash to lift microscopic grit out of the tiniest crevices.
- Borax Burnishing: Following the wash, we run a dedicated burnishing stage using Borax to deeply clean and prep the stones for their next phase.
Flat Lap Precision
For our machine-cut flat lap stones, our cleanliness standards remain just as strict. We meticulously clean all equipment, discs, and workspaces between different lap stages. We treat the transition from shaping to final polishing as a exact science to ensure absolutely no scratches mar the surface of your stone.
Multi-Stage Quality Gates
We do not wait until the end of the line to check our work. After every single tumbling or flat lap stage finishes, we pause for a strict manual inspection. We evaluate the smooth contour, the surface clarity, and how the stone catches the light. If a stone reveals hidden structural flaws mid-process, it is pulled—ensuring only the strongest, most beautiful gems make it to the finish line.

A masterfully polished stone deserves a reliable, secure home. To complete the journey, we exclusively pair our finished stones with gold and silver findings sourced from trusted, certified suppliers. The result is a flawlessly finished, high-durability piece of wearable history built to last.
